Bill—Leader-building is a bit like fly tying (well, maybe not quite that involved), and it can be a intriguing aspect of fly fishing overall. Commercial leaders (and by that I mean commercially extruded, not commercially hand-built), as a whole, used to be less complex in their tapering than they are now. The tapering offerings today have gotten pretty impressive (for example, see this leader, with integrated abrasion tippet). Certain Japanese manufacturers have done extruded leaders that are much like a number of the specialty leaders shown in the post, and American-based companies are also now producing some very nice leaders (including Harvey-style tapers as discussed above). Snoop around the sites of a few leader makers, and I think you'll find some suitable specialty designs.

Good to hear that you like the post. I hope that you will find a least a few future posts to be of similar use...

Being relatively new to fly fishing, I find this very interesting. My question is, how close do some of the comercial tappered leader come to some of these formulas? Are they all mostly standardized? Is a 6x frog hair the same as a 6x rio and do they equal say figure 5?

i will save this page because of the great information.
