@Marc—Thinking of one of the mountain-top stages (if I camped a week ahead-ha!), just to see the finish-line suffering/insane crowds...

As for the "C," think sideways Snap Cast (much like the initial anchor set of a Snap-T/Circle Spey, just on a "micro" scale).

Saw the SL post. I've done/used both static and dynamic/extended B&A casts (dynamic meaning adding the B&A to a distinct casting movement), as well as having someone hold the line behind me and doing the "slingshot" experiment (you have to be careful not to actually cast forward when the line is released). The distances are often "fishable," and as you saw, 40 feet can be there by holding the line (but you have to do it in the "real world" to make it count ;-) ).

@Satoshi—Would love to get over there for a couple of days and do some fishing. Casting to cruising fish (of any kind) is perhaps my favorite approach, since everything is so visible and the anticipation is so powerful. Gin-clear, slow-flowing spring creeks are right there, too, and watching the slow, sure rise is one fly-fishing's greatest aspects.

Jason,
I have had some great fish with bow-&-arrow right here in eastern WA. At Rocky Ford Creek in Ephrata, if the condition is right (you are the first one at 6am and/or nobody is around who would be fishing other places in the area),it can be great. Trout is crusing by the shore and you would be with the bushy area along with cattails. Dapping can be an option too. If you've got time to explore the waters in eastern WA, please let me know what you think.

any time Jason. any time :)

ironically, the Tour is a lot better on tv than in real.
wherever they go the road is so crowded, access difficult etc. basically all you get to see is a blur of overly bright colors...
but still, it's a good excuse to come discover the area.

fishing's pretty good. the major rivers are still blown out with snow melt and rain (massive snow season last winter) but the feeder streams are doing well with lots of good healthy hatches.

there's a post today on SL about how far one can cast with the Bow and Arrow cast. i managed 12 m / 39 ft with a 4 wt. by holding the line, not the fly. was wondering, have you ever measured this cast ?

looking forward to the "C" demo. it's not as simple as you say it is !

cheers,
marc

I try my best to wear a cowboy hat (and boots, of course) 24/7, but occasionally I am required to remove the hat ;-) . I have a great shot of me from my (very) early fly-fishing years, and what do I see? Cowboy hat and boots. I guess they've been residents of my gear bag forever...

The "C" is simple, but it can be effective in really tight spots. Perhaps I'll toss up a post on that this week...

Hope your spring season has been a good one, Marc. I'd love to get over your way and fish a bit (haven't done the Pyrenees) and watch some of the TdF, too...

where's the cowboy hat ? didn't recognize you there for a minute ! ;)

great article, thanks. this cast is very handy here in the Pyrenees.
banks are left wild and often there's no other way to present properly.

the "C" cast variant is new to me. i'm going out to practice it right now.

cheers,
marc
