Water-Painting – Soft Hackle #1

jborger_bb_wet1

The fly is essentially just water, and was long gone before I even started this post.

This water-painting is for long-time FF&W reader, Satoshi. In doing more experimentation with the Buddha Board, I’m starting to discover a few things: 1) the supplied brush requires a smooth, quick hand (smoother and quicker than I am used to); 2) water doesn’t necessarily behave on the Board in the way you might expect (or desire); 3) water evaporates off the Board faster than you might expect (or desire); 4) your breath makes for an artistic tool of sorts, quickly drying areas that you want to paint over, or to get a “ghost” effect (and it is also a fleeting element, much like water). 5) I’m determined to figure this thing out beyond the tinkering stage…stay tuned for more.

    Jason,
Thank you for answering my request. I love soft-hackles. May I guess this is the salmon/steelhead fly? If this is #1, can I expect more to come?

Satoshi—My pleasure with the fly. If other readers have Buddha Board fly requests, let me know and I’ll see what I can do as we go along. The fly is indeed a steelhead-style soft-hackle, something that I have become fond of over the years (I often tie them in demos to show how to use spinning loops with feathers). It can be scaled down, though, and since I love the “low-water” look, I often tie smaller flies in that style (if only just for visual, not fishing, reasons).
