Fishing (Still) Life: Tarpon Scales (Aug ’07)

While this isn’t technically a “still life,” the subject was at least holding still. There is something about tropical fish seen in tropical air that just can’t be replicated by anything else. Makes it even better if the tropical fish has just spent the previous 10 minutes yanking your arm off…

I take a lot of pictures when I go out to the wilderness in fly fishing trips, but if I look at my pictures they are essentially the same… This post and the previous ones on the matter makes me think again on it… in my next trip to Argentina (30 oct – 4 nov) I’m going to try photo shooting to everything, in these days where no film is involved you can afford it ;)

Simon—I grew up on film (slides, usually). Often spent a lot of time thinking about shots (sometimes too much). That was both good (got some really solid shots), but also bad (missed too much not having a 100-roll film budget per trip). So now, I shoot film (much less so), a D-SLR, and a waterproof/underwater “point-and-shoot.” Just burn up those megs (or gigs)! I still love having full manual control, but there a lot of times that being able to immediately fire off a string of pix has resulted in some worthwhile images—not always “good” shots, but sometimes “interesting” shots (like the shot above).

Hope that you get some pix on your next trip that take your eye to a different place…
