Some of What I’ve *Not* Been Doing…

King salmon in Wisconsin may not be pretty, but they still bite and fight just fine, thanks. Behind that handsome Photoshopped visage lurks GB, gleefully showing me one of the many “river horses” he reined in over the last four days or so.

He actually had the audacity to call me from the river while playing one of these (perhaps this very fish), violating at least two of fly-fishing’s own set of commandments simultaneously: Thou shalt not use one’s cell phone whilst one is on the river, which is linked directly to Thou shalt not use one’s cell phone *to taunt others* whilst one is on the river.

I guess that—despite his blatant breach of etiquette (which was further inflamed by his hideous laughter)—GB had a successful trip. He actually hit a bigger fish than this on the first cast (so he says). What really makes this fishing so exciting isn’t just the fact that they’re big, it’s that much of the fishing in this river is (if you choose) sight-fishing, and the takes can be surprisingly aggressive (for kings). GB said they wanted small flies, and even with the often-straightforward take and set, he ended up with more than a few “long-line” releases.

Yeah, cry me a river…

He gets it in wherever he can. Especially since he doesn’t cast as well as he used to… ;-)
