Bryan—I keep gear up at Gary Loomis’ place so I can fish the runs along his property (NF Lewis). Canyon is close by, as well, and while not exactly the Madison, it can be a lot of fun on a weekday, as you likely well know.

I also find myself drawn strongly to central Oregon (or perhaps what I should say is the “drier side,” not just the central area). I spent 3-4 weeks every year of my youth fishing the ponderosa high-country of New Mexico, and it’s so soaked into me that I am drawn like a magnet to anything similar!

So, that said, thanks for the kind words about my writing, and I promise to not let this blog become nothing more than a litany of fishing reports! But, if the fish is big enough… ;)

Oh yeah, I totally understand. Was merely a question of circumstance, not trying to say its by any means better or will get your mind off of the Browns.

I love your writing style and don’t desire to just read mindless fishing reports. Keep it as is, just using the comment stream to find out a bit more about if you had indeed been able to get out at all on what the PNW is famous for, or if you had been caught up in trips, work, etc.

Matt—I’m tending toward “keep-it-personal-unless-it’s-huge/mean/pretty-enough (or I can get a good shot of the beautiful wife).” And I promise to change all names to protect the innocent!

GB is this dichotomy of old-school, farm-boy stock crossed with serious fly-fishing professor, so you get Carhart, Woolrich, Patagonia, and Simms, all mashed together at the same time. I love it…

The PMML needs to cast again. Soon.

Bryan—Yes, and the PNW definitely has its own feel to the water, air, terrain, and of course, its special fish. But…I didn’t grow up fishing here (I fished in the PNW over the years, but these are not the “homewaters” of my youth). When the fall equinox comes, my mind tends to wander to those big, buttery browns with flanks that rival the maple leaves.

I don’t often post about my own fishing days. Don’t know why exactly, maybe because fishing is so personal for me. Writing about fishing in the context of a story or an educational piece has never really been an issue, but it seems that my day-to-day type of fishing often gets left out. Perhaps I’ll talk more about it over the upcoming winter months…

Have you been able to get out steelheading at all since moving this way, on a backyard river that is (EF/NF Lewis, Kalama, Cowlitz)?
