Bruno—Thanks for compliment on the story. The Fork can be fickle (especially in/near the Ranch section), but it can also be very rewarding. Hope you get the chance to fish it soon.

Scott—Thanks also for your kind words about the story, I appreciate it. Yeah, trying to pinpoint the head-and-tail risers in a "sea of white" can sometimes be difficult... ;-) As for beetles, I'm with you. My boxes are always stocked with at least a few, and I can't tell you how often they have made the day over the years.

Great story Jason! I have a love/hate relationship with the Henry's Fork, the Harriman in particular--it can be quite the frustrating place to fish. One of the funniest times was fishing right across from Trouthunter, just above the Ranch boundary. An incredible rise was happening in one of those prolific caddis hatches. Mostly just sipping rises, not anything too splashy (should have been my first clue). I couldn't figure out which fish to target because there were so many. Finally I settled into one and caught it on the second or third cast. I caught another four or so in the fading moonless light. All of them were whitefish feeding on the surface. I've never seen such a larger number of surface-feeding whitefish before or since.

Concerning the beetle--it has probably become one of my main go-to flies for many fishing situations.

Can't wait to see the photo.

Incredible! Haven't had the pleasure of fishing the fork, but I've heard the stories! I guess it's good to hear that even accomplished instructors like you still need to dig into your bag of tricks to get some wary fish!

The fish that survive and reproduce are smarter and warier. Hopefully generations to come will have an even fuller bag o' tricks! They'll need it!

Yeah! Where's the pic?! Great writing JB!
