Drawing Flies 52 – 08_Soft-Hackle

df52-08_softhackle

Drawing Flies 52 Soft Hackle. Almost salmon-style with those long fibers. Pen with some watercolor added with a detail brush. Couldn’t stay away from the color….

Available for purchase? No, kinda like it for myself.

Tech info: 9″ x 12″ Canson tracing paper (I’ve come to really like the gliding smoothness of this razor-thin paper for pen work). Pigma pen and a bit of watercolor. More tech info to come.

Jeff’s Soft-Hackle is here. I figured it was only a matter of time before one of us took a shot at doing something that involved pixels. To my eye, the fly feels traditionally painted at first glance, but then there is that super 3-D effect and the smooth, smooth edges that say “vector art.” My first thought was “What did he paint that with?” Then I realized…”Oh, cool.” My feelings on this type of truly mixed media? Do more! (And now that you’ve taken the lead with it, Jeff, I suppose I have to take a shot myself. This project is only starting to get interesting!)

Update 1: Sounds like Jeff has something brewing… Looking forward to seeing what you have going, my friend.

  1. Jason,
Been waiting for both of you to do soft-hackles. Been watching drawing posts, but I haven’t left any comments till now because all I can say is “great!”, “beautiful!”, that level, which I am doing now. Both you drawers are making quite an effort every week and entertaining us. On its course, surely it’s nice to see you come back to classic soft-hackles once or more. Since I can’t draw I tie some myself with my brandnew Regal vise!

Jason-Thanks! really digging the loose soft hackle interpretation!I am a true sucker for the spey style long hackles. I like the small blue drop in of color. Just enough cool to work with the warms. So what will it be for next week?

Satoshi—Thanks for thenote…I figured you’d like the soft-hackle stuff. I do think another is in order going forward. Jeff and I will have to talk about that.

Jeff—Appreciate it, my friend! I can how you went right to the 30 min limit with your piece. I was impressed not only with the quality of the render, but also the fact that you were able to fuse it all into a finished print within half-an-hour. Nice.

For next week, how about a Deceiver streamer (nice match to the Key’s tarpon fly we did a few weeks back)? Artist’s choice on color scheme (even go cockroach style if you want). I already know what I’m going to do with color, so if you’re cool, let’s run with that?
