Book One (Fishing the Film) Getting Closer…

ftf_cover032310

Book one of the (planned) 20-book GB/JB fly-fishing series is inching closer to reality. Fishing the Film is totally written, and almost through the final edit. I have begun to plan out what I need to do with the required illustrations over the next few weeks. I’ve decided to go in a direction that takes my hand-drawn work and enhances it via software. All of this has to be in black and white to keep costs reasonable for everyone (including those who purchase the book(s)), but I enjoy working in B&W, so no worries on this end.

Looks like we are also pretty much set on pricing for the entire series, and have honed the size (7X10 inches), word-count (50K to 70K per book, typically), overall look-and-feel, illustration needs, and writing direction. In addition, we have settled on a general cover design (see above), which we decided should follow all of the past Tomorrow River Press efforts, dating back to 1991′s Designing Trout Flies.

And in case anyone is wondering, these books are not going off-shore for printing. We’re keeping the print jobs in the States, along with our warehouse/distribution system. It costs more, but that’s what we want to do. We are hoping to have an approximate FtF release date soon!

    Jason,

You have me salivating. Do you need a proof reader?

    Onward,

    Gary

Simon, Gary—Thanks for the comments. We are going as fast as we can to get the first book out this spring (with more to follow). I’m the bottleneck right now, since I am loaded pretty heavily with other projects. Soon as I know a “close, maybe, almost” date for publication, I’ll have it up here.

    Jason,
I can hardly wait. Borger books are becoming very collectible. I noticed a signed “Presentations” book was selling for $450 at the Midwest Fly Fishing Expo. I have one at home but I’m not selling =)

  4. JB says:

Gregg—I’ll be hurrying it up over the next few weeks to get illustrations and layout done. This series is looking to be something north of a million words, so it will be a handful when finished! I doubt any of these books will fetch $450 any time soon, but I do hope that they’ll fetch something in the $25 range when new… ;-)

    Jason…

Will the series also include Gary’s PRESENTATION ?

    Best,

    Gordy

  6. JB says:

Gordy—We’re not planning on making Presentation itself part of the series. Basically, the series is like taking Presentation and breaking it out into 20 detailed books (with some extras thrown in for good measure). I know a lot of people are still interested in the “all-in-one” aspect that Presentation offered, so we’ll be thinking about that once the series is done (in five years or so).

Hope you’ve been well and catching some fish…

    Jason,

can I order all the 20 books now? :D

    Cheers,
    Grunde

  8. JB says:

Grunde—Thanks for the vote of confidence, my friend! We are considering that option, actually. If we can make the logistics work, we may do it. I’ll post something here if that does come to pass…
