Drawing Flies 52 – 14_Bass Popper

df52-14_bass_popper

Drawing Flies 52 Bass Popper. Mechanical pencil and pastel pencil on tracing paper with construction paper underlay.

Tech info: This was a pencil and pastel sketch, done in a fast hand on tracing paper. I really like working on tracing paper, and one reason is that it can overlay other paper or fabrics to get certain effects. In this case, a soft blue construction paper was laid under the tracing paper (sort of like layers in Photoshop, but the old fashioned way). Not a complex layering, but enough to create an interesting effect in a short period of time. I didn’t check the actual drawing time on this one, but I beat the 30-minute *beep,* so that’s ultimately what matters.

Jeff’s Bass Popper here. Figured I’d see another “graphic style” from Jeff soon, and here it is, done as a paint/digital hybrid. I really enjoy that kind of work, and Jeff’s popper has that “caricature” style that echoes the cartoonish aspects of bass poppers themselves. Almost feels like it could be Flash animation frame from a cool little short film. Do some more, Jeff!

JB-Nicely done! I really dig the feeling of the tooth of tracing paper against pencil also. This image reminds me of some of the drawings done by Homer. We had the opportunity to see the Homer exhibit a few years back when it traveled to the Art Institute in Chicago. The angle of the fly and the rubber legs in a rearward flowing position really gives the image a sense of movement. So what is up for this week my friend?

Jeff—Thanks. Kelley and I actually saw that same Homer exhibit (have a post on it here). Nice to have the drawing remind you of a Homer sketch! Somehow, I don’t quite see this popper making the Art Institute, though. ;-)

Let me think about the next fly for a day….

It may not ever make it to the Art Institute, but it is always going to be in my arsenal. Nice job on it though
