FF&W [expeditions]™ is now booking spots for a select few anglers who have what it takes to meet the challenge of the puffer. We recommend appropriate angling gear (flip-flops are a good start), and specialty flies such as a pink Bogglehead (shown), or a size 12 Hare’s Ear.

After years of research and the redemption of countless FF&W frequent flier miles, a new saltwater fly-fishing horizon is finally here: Puffer! That’s right, the ghostly “permit of the docks,” known for its selective appetite, savage runs and spectacular inflatability.

This type of fishing is not for the unprepared, or for those unfamiliar with saltwater angling. Rods as heavy as a three-weight, and casts that may need to reach 12-15 feet (in a stiff tropical breeze) are de rigueur when pursuing puffer. Actually using a reel is not uncommon for bigger fish, and a smooth—but powerful—disk-drag system is highly recommended.

A careful stalk around and over log pilings and discarded buoys is often required to get into position for a cast at these elusive harbor dwellers. A quick, accurate presentation is absolutely necessary, and a strong strip-strike will ensure a good hook-up. The angler should also be fit enough to handle the type of fight one expects of this regal quarry.
