Drawing Flies 52 – 15_GRHE
Drawing Flies 52 Gold Ribbed Hare’s Ear. Mechanical pencil and watercolor on tracing paper with watercolor wash underlay.
Tech info: More soon, but I can tell you it was a week for experiments, based on last week’s work. I can also tell you that the fly has basically no color to it at all—just pencil and a few highlights (with a touch of gold on the tinsel). The rest of the colors are all underneath on another layer. Had some fun with it, and just decided that whatever happened, happened.
Jeff’s GRHE is here. I think Jeff really hit with this one! The palette may be limited, but the fly has real presence on the paper, and the cool ultramarine provides the needed balance to my eye. Like I commented on Jeff’s blog, I think this one may make the “Jeff’s top 10″ in the end for me (of course, we still have 37 to go).

JB-I like the perspective on this one! Interesting the way be both took the “limited palette” approach for the values on the fly. I really like the treatment of the gold ribbing-really reads. Nice job on this one!
I have to agree with Jeff regarding the gold ribbing. It looks really brilliant. It really does look like the fly, and how many of those flies have I photographed in my time?! Very lovely Hon’.
Thanks Jeff, I appreciate the kind comments. I had hoped the ribbing would do what it did, so I was pleased wit that. Let’s talk next week’s fly when you get a chance…
To Kel—Thanks, luv. I always like seeing your comments. And yes, there has been plenty (too much, perhaps) photography and background knock-out of Hare’s Ears and a thousand other flies over the years.
JB-Had a request from spey caster and fly tying extraodinaire Marty Howard to do something steelhead. I have to agree, since steelhead season is in full swing here in the Midwest. Although heavy rain has been blowing out the home water most weekends. He suggested an Undertaker – A steelhead classic.
Jeff—Was literally thinking yesterday that the Undertaker should be one of our flies. Seems like it’s a pattern that a lot of people like! So, Undertaker it is.
