Drawing Flies 52 – 16_Undertaker

Drawing Flies 52 Undertaker. Made with pen, paper, scanner and software.

Tech info: Pen and ink on Pentalic paper, scanned into Photoshop for adjustment, exported to Illustrator, tweaked and colored. I wanted the Undertaker to have a sense of darkness about it that went beyond the fly itself, so I scribbled a thick black background with a brush-tip pen. I hoped that I could make it work right in one shot, since once all that ink is down, it’s down! I also wanted to the drawing to feel more like a wood or linoleum print, so I went with my preferred digital method to “chunk up” the lines. The result was an inky black fly that was both set apart from, and integrated with, the inky black background. Of course, the Undertaker isn’t all doom and gloom, so I had to be sure that the colors popped on the red and green accents. Hard to beat pure digital “ink” for that. Had a few minutes to spare at the end.

Jeff’s Undertaker is here. I really like the mid-value paper stock and charcoal, I think, was the right choice for the wing. It really adds that textured sense of a hair-wing, without having to force anything. And the metal-work has Jeff’s usual brightness that I’ve always liked. Nice work, my friend!

And for those who might be interested in an alternate vision (not a part of the 30-minute exercise), here’s a “darker” takeĀ on the drawing. I wanted a vision of something just visible in the black; a figure that can’t be clearly realized. Something perhaps even a bit foreboding.

JB- Like the feel of this one. I have always been a big fan of the woodcut. I like the the woodcut look you achieved with this digital version. The touch of color really draws your eyes in! So what will it be for this week?
