Jason,
I had double hookups threee times last year. I really wonder what the second trout are seeing after the first ones start to shake and fight, yet they still come & bite to flies under water.
One of those at Firehole, I actually saw the third one (quite large for Firehole, estimated 16") came to charge (or warn) two strugglers. Quite a scene. I ended up landing one 10-incher....

Simon—I've hit doubles in waters with a lot of little brookies, etc., but not two big fish (though I know a few people who have had doubles on much larger fish over the years). Sad dropper story: Years ago, my mother hooked a very large brown trout in NZ (fishing a little "nothing" stream), and the fish powered away past a little wooden bridge. The dropper fly caught one of the pilings on the bridge and the huge fish stalled, twisted a few times, and then broke off. My mother, however, was still attached to bridge. She was not happy (it was a really big brown). Last time she fished droppers in NZ....

I rather more often than not use droppers (except where prohibited by law) to shear for a pattern success in unknown watters. I've always wondered if any one get a double with a 2 flies dropper!?
