Drawing Flies 52 – 20_Woolly Worm

df52-20_woollyworm

Drawing Flies 52 Woolly Worm. A little break from the usual. When I drew/painted this, I was thinking of the dim, dusty corners of the old Weber Tackle building in Steven’s Point, Wisconsin. Weber is long gone, but my father still has sets of drawers from the place, bought many years ago. A lot of history in those drawers, and a lot of forgotten old flies and materials must have passed through them over the years.

Notes: This fly started as a fast charcoal drawing, which was then scrubbed in a sink (creating a literal “charcoal wash”). The scrubbing gave it a swirling, dark feel that I couldn’t have achieved so easily otherwise. I then went back at it with charcoal and pen again, followed by water color and a bit of white pastel. Got that dusty, dirty, long-forgotten sense I wanted.

Tech info: Charcoal wash, charcoal, white pastel, watercolor, and pen on Pentalic paper.

    Jason,
I really, really like this drawing. Details, colors, scale, everything! I just enjoy looking at it. Makes me think baok to lots of great memories including the first fly I ever tied (which I still keep in a small jewelry box), great water, fine fish, good friends. . . Thank you for this symbol of awakening my pure joy of the sport. – Gary

Gary—Wow. Didn’t think the fly would have as much appeal to others as it did to me. Truly pleased to hear it brings you such remembrances. Guess we both have vivid memories that the “mood” of this fly evokes.

JB- The fly fits perfectly with the Old Weber Tackle Store description. I can even hear the creaking wood floors! Nice mood to this one. The touch of green plays well with the red tail.

So, what will it be for week 21?
