Drawing Flies 52 – 23_Sofa Pillow

Drawing Flies 52 Sofa Pillow. The big salmonflies are out and about in some places, so this fly seemed appropriate.

Tech info: Strathmore paper with charcoal, Pigma pen and watercolor. Like the Doc Oatman, I used all 30 minutes here. I had to do an underdrawing/painting first, then rinse/wipe it, and then do the pen and the final watercolor. No short way to do that, so 30 minutes it was. Liked the end result, though! If I’d had more time, I would have taken greater care in the final watercolor (to let more pen through), but I’m still satisfied with what I got.

Jeff’s Sofa Pillow (ha!) is here.

JB-Alright, I now have a new favorite! The warm tones with just the right hint of cool in background reminds me of the salmon flies I encountered during a visit to Yellowstone. The great thing about the 30 minute rule is that you cannot go back and run the risk of “overworking” a piece. I think that it is perfect! Job well done my friend.

Jeff—Thanks! I have to admit that it is probably my new favorite, too (from my stuff, at least). It just came together right, I guess. Actually, this technique is one I want to play with some more, and I think that I’ll do some more serious pieces like this.

Interesting how these 30 minute (or less) exercises can lead in so many directions and end-results. Everything from “Well, I’ll have to try again,” to “Wow, I’ll have to try that again!” This fly is the latter for me.
