Some Old Art: Ephemera danica

jborger_danica

With “big mayflies” of various kinds now hatching in many parts of the northern hemisphere, I thought that I’d toss up a drake illustration that I did in the last century. Was originally a pen-and-ink piece, but this sample was subsequently hand-colored (pencil with liquid blender). I think a related fly-tying piece may be in order after this. Stay tuned.

    Hi Jason!

The Ephemera danica is hatching right now in Denmark, and I’m out there pretty much every spare moment I have :-).
Is that really a drawing – it’s looks like a photograph – and I mean that in the most positive sense!

    Absolutely breath taking!!!

Lars—Thanks for the very kind comment about my work! That one is not a 30-minute fly…

Hope you get some great fishing during the danica hatch. I have some very fond memories of fishing in England during a spectacular hatch on equally spectacular water. Once of those times when you realize that you’re living something that you’ll never forget.

I also need to get you a Mickey Finn (only a month or so late). I’ll do my best to make that happen in the next few days (supposed to hit the 80s F here this weekend, so I may be “distracted” by the local waters).

I’m so happy to have stumbled upon your website this morning, for a variety of reasons, but seeing your amazingly gorgeous illustrations tops the list. I love it when I feel inspired by art, and I feel that way today. I agree with Lars, your work is breathtaking!!!

    Cheers,
    Graham

Graham—Thanks for taking the time stop by the blog and to post such a kind comment. Just had a quick look through your autumn Sierra photography and some of your more abstract floral shots (I am a fan of near-abstract floral, which is a bit of niche to be a fan of, but hey, we all have our things). My eyes are now saturated for the morning (still a bit bleary at the moment, but saturated)! Really beautiful work. Also looks like we both have a friend in Steve Fernandez, as well.
