Drawing Flies 52 – 25_Gartside Sparrow
Drawing Flies 52 Gartside Sparrow. A little piece for an fondly remembered friend who also gave me the best tour of Boston that I could ever have hoped for (this one’s for you, Jack).
Tech info: Pentalic paper with pencil, pen and watercolor. I wanted a fly that reminded me of Jack Gartside. Not just the pattern (his sparrow), but the actual feel of the drawing. I think I got it. I especially like the bright orange thread at the head of the fly. If you knew Jack, I think you can understand why I would add a touch of slightly out-of-place brilliance to a fly dressed in well-worn tweed and corduroy….
Jeff’s Sparrow is here. Four minutes and some spit. I think Jack would have liked that approach!

Jason,
Waiting for this one! Great drawing! I also like to make a nice thread head for all the soft-hackles. I apply bees-wax before whip-finish and no cement afterwards. Done right, not trapping any fibers, it’s cool.
I will use Sparrow as nymphs besides swinging. I may have to play with unpredictable weather in Yellowstone. I’ll find more next week. But I’m sure Sparrow will bring me lots of trout.
Figured you might like that. Have a great time in Yellowstone, and I hope the weather levels out a bit for you.
JB- Another beauty! I am always a sucker for bright colored head thread wraps. Nice and loose yet reads great!
How about an Irresistible for this week?
Jeff
Jeff—Thanks so much for the kind comment, my friend. There are times that I just have to break from my sometimes overly restrained illustration background and just let the thing happen. Fortunately,it happened okay this time! I was happy with it, and I hope that Jack would have been, too.
Irresistible works for me.
