Just a shot I pulled from the archives. Kel fishing a deserted stretch of a Montana river. Caddis adult + caddis pupa. Cast, mend, drift, swing. Repeat until it’s “fish on!”

    Caddis adult + pupa? Was Kel fishing a 2 fly rig? What would you say is the optimum distance between the adult fly and the pupa?

    Bruno—Yes, two-fly rig. I usually base distance on water depth/speed and fly weight (of course fly type—what it’s imitating—is a factor, too). If I recall right, we set up the rig with about 18-inches between flies for this area in general and it worked well overall. Most of the fish took the pupa, with a few taking a shot at the adult.
