FtF Drawings Done Today!

At last, the final few drawings for Fishing the Film should be done today. I have been inserting the drawings into layout as I go (and doing captions at the same time), so that means that the book should be ready to go to the printers within a week or so. That pleases me to no end. Then I only have 19 more books (plus the second edition of Nature of Fly Casting) to get a handle on. It’s going to be a long five years….

Well, as they say about a cold – if you take the right medication, it’ll last a week and if you do nothing, it’ll last 7 days.
If you maintain a good workflow, it’ll take 5 years and if you do all sorts of other interesting stuff in between, it might only feel like 60 months :-).
Another amazing drawing, BTW! I love the way you seem to catch the essence of a fly with so simple means. And it even looks like it’s underwater.

Lars—I fear that it is going to feel much more like 60 months, rather than merely 5 years… ;-)
And thanks for the comment about the fly itself. For this project, I have done a combination of drawing techniques, but mostly split into two camps: The “newer” artistic style I’m using (like you see above), and my older, highly detailed “how-to” work. Indeed, there are some “re-purposed” pieces from earlier work being used in this book series. I have also digitized (as fully scalable vector art) a pile of those older illustrations that I can now cut-and-paste and mix-and-match to create just about anything that I want going forward. Huge time saver, and it allows me to focus my artistic efforts on the first category of drawings, while the how-to illustrations can be handled in Adobe Illustrator. It’s proving to be a slick combo, and it will make 20 books over 5 or so years possible.
