Drawing Flies 52 – 32_Serendipity

Drawing Flies 52 Serendipity.

Seemed like this fly went together much like the day that preceded it: A lot of thinking things were going alright, then discovering that nothing worked out exactly as planned. Not that it means it was bad, just not at the level that I had really wanted. It just feels like everything is almost there, but that the end result feels like a beta version of what I was after. Some shades of that DF52 Sparkle Pupa that didn’t work out, either (though I think this is certainly better overall). I do also see some glimmers of things that did work, though, like the coarseness of the trimmed deer hair (thanks, Lars) and the hook point area, but I have to say this was not one of my better efforts. I’ll try to up my game again next week (and maybe I’ll try not to leave the fly until 10PM this time).

Tech info: Pencil on brown craft paper with watercolor.

Jeff’s Serendipity is here. Loving the warm tones and the sense of depth! The head of the fly looks like it’s popping off the paper (Kel agrees). Nice, Jeff.

About time – it’s almost noon Friday here :-).

Nice one as always! I like the way you captured the coarse texture of the spun deerhair!

JB- It is interesting how we form an image in our minds eye of how we would like the image to come out. And then there is this disconnect that occurs between our brain and hand. That being said, not knowing what your fantastic vision was for this fly, I have to say it looks great to me! I have to agree with Lars about the deer hair. when I did my version, I had to go back to your rendition of the irresistible for deer hair inspiration. I really like the torn craft paper edges of the final image. Helps to complete the sketchy quality of the image.

Jeff—Thanks so much! I agree that sometimes there is that weird disconnect that happens. And in my case, I think that part of the issue here may have been that the image I “saw” would have required a couple of hours to complete! Sometimes one has to weed out the images that are unrealistic for the time/skill at hand, I think.

Funny you should mention the deer hair, because next to my hooks, I think I worked on my deer hair drawing the most when I was younger. Deer hair always frustrated me as a kid and frankly it still does in some ways. I am at a point where I feel that I can get a handle on it, but still not where I feel that I can easily make the image that I’m after (had to throw that last bit in there). Who would have thought that deer hair could be so vexing? New DF52 rule: No more deer hair! ;-)

And I’ll tell you this: I’ve gone back to look at your reflective work on tinsel, etc. for my own inspiration, so we’re even!
