“The River Why” Trailer

Got an e-mail that this was fresh out of the (digital) cutting room. Someone you might recognize at 0:39 getting what is apparently a much-needed casting lesson from the female lead (Amber Heard)….

I trust Kelly was close by?

Any word about the status of the court case regarding the film rights and the book’s author David James Duncan?

  2. JB says:

Dan—Actually, Kel was off doing something else that day (she did have perfect timing to show up for lunch though!). It was a long day in Portland and we had to rush the “instruction” shots right at the end of the afternoon. Amber and I had to do a bit of clever interaction to get the whole little scene to work properly, and hopefully (I haven’t seen it yet) the final version turned out well.

As far as I know from press releases and so forth, the lawsuit was settled, the film is okay to go, and David James Duncan may go ahead and make his own version (which I’d both love to be a part of and to see). I have re-read the book twice this last year; there is so much in that speaks to me (some of it very directly).

    Very cool.

Any word on a release date for this? I’m almost reluctant to see the film in case it doesn’t do the book justice.

  4. JB says:

Will—No idea on a release date (it is showing up at a few film festivals, etc. right now). I fully understand about a desire to see a film do a book justice. Doing The River Why the type of justice each of us has in our heads may not be possible (I know the “movie” that I have in my own head would probably not get at the depth of what I actually “see” when I read the book).

As far as this adaptation, I have not seen it yet, so cannot comment on how the final product relates to the book (one should expect both similarities and departures, though).

Jason, where were the fishing scenes shot? It looks like it will be a very good movie.
I will have to put that book on my reading list for the winter.

  6. JB says:

The fishing scenes that I worked on were shot in Oregon (the majority within an hour or two of Portland). Readers familiar with the Wilson should recognize some water, and there are a few other places that may or may not jump out at those who have swung a fly in the Beaver State.

As far as the book goes, it’s a favorite read for me!
