Drawing Flies 52 – 35_Crazy Charlie

Drawing Flies 52 Crazy Charlie. Went the retro pop-art route for this one (did Warhol ever do a fly?). Knew well ahead of time where I was going with it, and just took my time getting there. Beat the 30 minute mark, and didn’t have to rush to do it.
Notes: This began as a hand-drawn Charlie (a two-minute endeavor), followed by a scan into Photoshop for a little clean-up, and then an export into Illustrator where I did the colorization. I had almost this exact picture in my head when I started and only added the half-tone dots as I went (are the dots too much? Perhaps, but this is where I ended up, so they will have to do). Any reader who has ever had much to do with printing will immediately recognize my pure CMYK color scheme (and the dots are two-color mixes). Hey, at least Jeff and I will have a built-in CMYK reference for the DF52 book printing!
Tech info: Pen on paper. Scanned into Photoshop and then built in Illustrator.
Jeff’s Crazy Charlie is here. Ha! He went all digital again. And a really nice grayscale piece, too (I love grayscale). Jeff’s has some special gear attached to that computer of his (and a good brush library, too), and it’s cool to see what he comes up with in the 30-minute time limit (liking that metal work). Really nice effort, Jeff!

Andy Warhol style!, nice. Hope you dont live that crazy life that is used to be back then… for the children (and the ones not to young also) who read this, stay out of drugs! Winners don’t use it.
Simon—Glad you like the Warhol style (had to do it for one of the DF52 flies eventually). These days, the strongest thing I have coursing through my veins is decaf coffee! Fortunately, living in the Portland area, I can get insanely good decaf coffee (and related “unleaded” coffee libations).
Ha! You forgot to add your other addictions to French pastry, donuts, and late night visits to Potato Champion for poutine, among other vices. See, our life is a bit wilder than decaf. ;-)
Not just any doughnuts, either, but pure Voodoo Doughnut greatness (best wolfed down in a dark, rainy parking lot at about 11pm). And yes, French pastry—sometimes I think that I my arteries are lined in butter and flaky dough….
JB-Gotta love the Warhol, donuts, and pastry! This would make a great limited edition screen print! We might have to think about that since I have access to a high end production screen printer! Would also have to come complete with a signature edition of Voodoo Doughnuts!
We have the Warhol museum here in Pittsburgh. As far as I remember, Warhol was into soup cans and weird hair-dos, not trout flies.
Jeff—Let’s talk about that screen printer of yours!
Dan—Think the museum would mind if you snuck an impostor’s Crazy Charlie print in to liven up the collection?
Maybe if you wrote Campbell’s or Heinz on the thorax.
