Drawing Flies 52 – 36_Dahlberg Diver

Drawing Flies 52 Dahlberg Diver. If you grew up where I did, you eventually had one of these tied to the end of your line/bite tippet (assuming you wanted to take a shot at northern pike).
Notes: Wanted to experiment a bit with a cross between ink-and-brush and pen-and-ink. Added some watercolor to spice up the end result a bit, but I’m not sure it was really necessary. Think of it as Sakasa Kebari meets Irresistible.
Tech info: Ink wash, pencil, pen, and watercolor on Canson watercolor paper.
Jeff’s DiverĀ is here. Now that’s thinking outside the paint-box! The fleeting, “reversed” image carved onto a grimy sidewalk works for me. The first words out of Kel’s mouth: “That’s really cool!” I’d have to agree.

Hey Jason,
How are you doing?
I love Dahlberg divers! I love tying them.
Here are a few I tied:

Jay–There is something about tying deer hair flies like divers, wakers and poppers that is very addictive (once one gets the skill-set for the hair handling). I remember one time at a camp on a Wisconsin river when I was a kid. The pike were in thick, hunting in the shallows. I only had a couple of deer-hair mouse flies and no wire or mono bite tippet. It was cool to see the pike hammer those mice, even if the whole thing only lasted long enough for them to obliterate my puny leader! Never got one close to hand that day, but it was fun while it lasted.
Yeah had similar experiences.
The first time I saw the Dahlberg Divers was an old video (VHS!) by Larry Dahlberg. He was popping the diver somewhere (in Alaska?) and boy those pike just went bonkers!
Recently I bought the DVD at In-Fisherman for a few bucks. What a great DVD!
