Drawing Flies 52 – 40_Wickham’s Fancy

Drawing Flies 52 Wickham’s Fancy. Drew it like I imagined I’d have tied it when I was still in grade-school: Wings too thin and perhaps too high, an overly bushy tail, scattered hackle, an old Mustad hook that looked like it was formed with a pair of pliers, and near-perfect tinsel. I was obsessed with tinsel, and went to great lengths to get my tinsel just right. Once I had a pattern down, I could tie 1,000 of them (indeed, of some I did). But when trying a new pattern, especially a fly like this, I would always end up with something(s) out of place (not sure much has changed since then!).

Oh, I also drew it “fancy.” I just couldn’t resist the temptation to make it pop and shine.

Tech info: Mechanical pencil, watercolor and “Gelly Roll” pen on craft paper.
