FlyTalk: 3 Materials for 6 Midges

Assuming I got the materials to them in time today, there should be new fly-tying post up on “Field & Stream” magazine’s FlyTalk blog either tomorrow (Tuesday) or perhaps Thursday. The subject is “3 Materials for 6 Midges,” and covers some easy ways to use minimal materials to create simple, but effective patterns. No dedicated, step-by-step how-to, but if you can dub a body and wind a hackle, you should be fine figuring the flies out. If you’re a trout-fly tier, check it out.

Saw it and liked it. Thanks, Jason. Reading some of those tying magazines, I often get overwhelmed by the 20+ step recipes with all the expensive, specialty materials. Your helpful offering stirs me to want to have a go at the vise again.

Dan—Good to hear that you found it to be worth the read and that it provided a tying kick-start for you. The SP Brassie, the Sparkle Midge Pupa and the Griffith’s Gnat are all long-time midge staples for me (and a lot of other anglers, too), and they are so easy to tie that it almost seems a little unfair. But, if they work, they work!
