Drawing Flies 52 – 48_Turkey Spey

Top: Original drawing (not so great). Bottom: Enhanced version (a brighter not-so-great). Oh well.
Drawing Flies 52 Turkey Spey. Seems like an appropriate fly given the U.S. holiday today. Drew this one dressed heavily for dark, cold water (no gravy, though). Frankly, my approach didn’t work out right, I feel, and I’m not happy with what I got.
Notes: Went in the direction of the Jack O’Lantern Spey, but it didn’t work like I had hoped (the JOL works to my eye, this doesn’t). I then ran out of time to do something different. Maybe too much sweet-potato pie for dessert clouded my mind and slowed my hand. Oh well, there’s next week to try for something better….
I decided to do an alternate version after I scanned it into Photoshop, just to see how a few settings would affect the mood of the drawing (that’s the bottom image). Was an interesting take on the thing, but it was outside the bounds of our 30 minute window, so I include it only for comparison.
Tech info: Pencil, ink, watercolor on sketchpad.
Jeff’s lovely Turkey Spey is here. Really like the feeling and flow of the feathers, Jeff. A subtle and well-toned rendering to my eyes.
Update: Woke up this morning (Friday) and finally figured out what’s really bothering me about this drawing. Too much work in the body (look at how deliberately I treated the wire there—ugh). Looks I was 12 when I drew it. Ruins the rest for me. I needed to go much more suggestive and loose, and also should have kept the overall dressing less structured. Must have suffered a Thanksgiving throwback to my junior high-school days….
