Drawing Fish 52 – 03_Bonefish

Drawing Fish 52 Bonefish. This one is drawn for my friend, Coach Duff, at Hawaiian Bonefishing. The drawing is based on several Hawaii bonefish shots he sent me, with the angle and the eye being based specifically on one shot in that I really liked. The colors and some other details are from a couple of other fish in the images that Coach sent my way.

Notes: Moleskine Watercolour Notebook. A prelim sketch to get the proportions and slight angle right, then into the actual piece itself. Really liked the pencil work that I laid down in the first couple of minutes, and am thinking I should have left it like that! Did too much chasing a look that I couldn’t get in time. Still okay, but I really think that I had it better a few minutes in with nothing but some lines of graphite on paper—such is the way it goes…. Hope you like it anyway, Coach!

Tech info: Mechanical pencil and watercolor on Moleskin Watercolour Notebook.

Jeff’s Bonefish is here. More later…

Update: Not satisfied with this. Head shape is bothering me. Drew too late last night and was not on my game like I should have been. I’m going to do another, and I’m going to keep it in pencil only. Will try to get it done tonight (Friday) or at some point over the weekend.

JB- Love the angle of this one! Would have liked to do something similar, but lack of confidence and ref photos, drew me back to profile. I am really digging the graphite work and washes! Nice job brother!

Jeff—Thanks for the compliment, my friend. I like the angle, too, just felt that I got a little too rounded on the fish’s head. I’ll fix that with a pencil sketch redux!
