Drawing Fish 52 – 21_Golden Dorado

Drawing Fish 52 Golden dorado—sort of like a salmon dipped in plating and sprayed with attitude. Based on a series of photos from my friend, Grant Wiswell. In my mind, the golden dorado is in some ways the “tigerfish of the Americas” (the tiger being another DF52 fish we’ll be drawing). Love the look of this fish and need to draw it some more.

Notes: Just let the pencil run a bit here, especially with the distinct line patterns on the gill plates. Didn’t want to risk muddying up the image too much so kept the watercolor loose and fairly thin. Not a deeply saturated piece, but I think it gets across the core structure and hues of this powerful gamefish.

Tech Info: Pencil and watercolor on vellum.

Available for Purchase? Yes, contact me if interested.

Check out Jeff’s site for his golden dorado. Really liking how the colors are working together in Jeff’s piece. Has a great sense of depth to the skin/gill plates.

And available in much warmer locales than salmon.

That was in response to your twitter post. Realize it’s completely out of context here.

Bryan—I’ll probably use the same wording from my Twitter feed when I flesh out this post some more, so it will all make sense then! But, yes, warmer and rather more exotic for most of us (unless one lives in that part of South America, of course). The golden dorado is sort of the tigerfish of the Americas, I think, minus the very large, very unnerving teeth (although dorado teeth are nothing to really mess with, either).
