DF52 (2010) – Week 35

This week’s DF52 fish is going to be a silver (coho) salmon. Keep watching for that. In the meantime, above is the week 35 image from last year’s DF52 project (2010 was flies only): the Crazy Charlie. You can read the original post here.

Random Photo – Retro Flies

Just a pile of flies that I dumped out on my desk recently and felt were worth a quick pic. Once I imported the photo, I went a bit old-school and tacked on a couple of retro-feeling filters. The end result brings my mind’s eye back to those cold, youthful Wisconsin winters of the 1970s [...]

Drawing Fish 52 – 34_Rio Grande Cutthroat

This post is way late, I’m off fishing, and I’ll have to fill in the rest later! For now, you have this week’s Rio Grande Cutthroat—a special fish with which I have a very long history. At least a few readers of this blog have been to the location that this image is based on. [...]

5 Minutes X 12 FIlms = Go Watch

The Drake Video Awards. Watch. Enjoy. Vote. I don’t really need to write any more than that.

Making the Cast

With the IFTD show having been in New Orleans this past weekend, I got to thinking about saltwater, cruising fish and the casting required to do what needs to be done. Fortunately, I already have a short article on the subject here at hand. It’s a piece that has recently appeared in Fly Fish America [...]

DF52 (2010) – Week 33

For those following the weekly Drawing Fish 52 (DF52) project this year, here’s a look back at what was happening last year at this same time. The DF52 project in 2010 was Drawing Flies, and the fly from week 33 (corresponding with the Dolly Varden this year) was a Sakasa Kebari (for Tenkara fishing). The [...]

Drawing Fish 52 – 33_Dolly Varden

Drawing Fish 52 Dolly Varden. Well, Jeff is back from Alaska with stories and photos. Sounds like he had a great trip, indeed. He emailed me as soon as he was back and said that he wanted to do a Dolly Varden. That sounded good to me. I have a pile of Dolly pix here from [...]

“The River Why” Premier/Benefit Screening

The River Why, which has been making the film fest rounds over the last year or so, is going to have its official premier in Portland on September 9. Kelley and I will be attending, and three of the principle actors are also coming in for the showing: Zach Gilford (Gus), William Hurt (H2O), and [...]

Fly Fish Journal – Issue 3.1

I’ve been enjoying the latest issue of the “The Fly Fish Journal,” especially the image spread in the “Rises” section, number 02. I could see that at about 5×8 (feet) on a big, empty wall that I don’t currently own. Do you subscribe? If so, then you know the shot I’m referring to. Don’t subscribe? [...]

Bill Oyster Rods

I’ve been an admirer of Bill Oyster’s rod work for some time, and figure that since it is shaping up to be an “art week” here at FF&W that I’d post a link or those who haven’t seen Bill’s work. If you follow that link, you’ll likely see why I like what Bill does, and [...]

Drawing Fish 52 – 32_Deschutes Redside Study

Click to make bigger. This week of the Drawing Fish 52 project was deemed “anything goes.” Jeff is off in Alaska catching giant fish left and right (and painting, to keep up appearances). So, I decided to go with a study of a Deschutes Redside. This is a smaller piece in prep for one or [...]

Fishing the Leadville 100

I’ve had the Leadville 100 ultra-marathon mountain bike race on in the background as I work at home today, painting and writing. For those of you unfamiliar with the event, you can find out more here (check the start altitude and the pass elevations. Oh yeah, also check out some of the athletes who have [...]

Some Good News About Pelican Creek

Old family friend, Royce Dam, fishing Pelican back in the day. Own a copy of Reading Waters? (If you don’t, you should.) Go check out page 24 for the same shot in relation to feeding lies. According to a post at the New Heathen’s blog, one of my absolute favorite places to fish from my [...]

DF52 (2010) – Week 31

For those following the weekly Drawing Fish 52 (DF52) project this year, here’s a look back at what was happening last year at this same time. The DF52 project in 2010 was Drawing Flies, and the fly from week 31 (corresponding with the chum salmon this year) was a Brassie. The fly is shown above. [...]
