Drawing Fish 52 – 34_Rio Grande Cutthroat

This post is way late, I’m off fishing, and I’ll have to fill in the rest later! For now, you have this week’s Rio Grande Cutthroat—a special fish with which I have a very long history. At least a few readers of this blog have been to the location that this image is based on. Need a clue? Think 10,000 feet, extreme northern New Mexico, looking more or less south.

Update: Back from fishing—success in the heat and smoke of central Oregon. Small stream stuff this time, and I’ll have some pix up shortly (including some Tenkara-style action).

Update 2: A little more about the piece above. The location is on the Vermejo Ranch in northern New Mexico, in particular the stretch of Costilla Creek not far below Lake Number One. There are often elk on the open hillside off to the right, and some particularly fine examples of Rio Grande Cutthroat in that little ribbon of blue in the center. Go another couple of miles up the dirt road behind this viewpoint and you’re in Colorado.

While the colors of the fish are fairly accurate, I went with deliberately “southwest” versions of the hues as a nod to the long Native American history of the place. Really a special piece of property with a fantastic history (and pre-history).

VERY NICE—THAT WOULD LOOK GREAT AT THE DANA GALLERY!
    GLAD YOU ARE FISHING
HOW ABOUT SOME MORE OF THIS STYLE IN THE OTHER SPECIES.

Awesome. Love that place, and I REALLY like your piece. Let me know if it goes up for sale.

Larry—Thanks very much. I appreciate you taking the time to comment. Gotten a fair number of requests for the digital pieces. I may look into a good way to make them available in archival quality. We’ll see about that….

Flynn—Thanks, my friend! I agree on the Dana Gallery…perhaps at about 2X3 feet each. And yes, I have some work to do. I have a list of fish and places that I want to do in this style, and not only in 30 minutes or less.

Glad to see you made it back to NM!
